This July, I’ll be speaking at the Canadian Visual Analytics School (CANVAS) summer school conference in Toronto.

About CANVAS 2015

CANVAS 2015 is a three-day summer school hosted by CIVDDD and CANVAC.

The Centre for Innovation in Information Visualization and Data-Driven Design (CIVDDD) is a research hub for innovation and training in data analytics, and information and scientific visualization in Ontario. The CIVDDD research combines existing regional and academic industry strengths to create and develop new methods and tool for data driven design. This provides new products and services as well as highly trained personnel, for a variety of data analytics and visualization applications. Learn more at http://www.civ-ddd.ca.

The Canadian Network for Visual Analytics (CANVAC) is a Canadian Not-for-profit Corporation, designed to address the needs of a growing visual analytics (VA) research community in Canada by supporting the requirements of VA stakeholders, i.e., researchers, developers, and user organizations. CANVAC members include Canadian universities pioneering VA research, and related government research agencies and industrial research organizations. Founding academic members, the University of British Columbia, Simon Fraser University and Dalhousie University, have been joined by the University of Alberta, University of Calgary, York University, OCAD University and University of New Brunswick. About Visual Analytics, the Training School’s Focus

Visual Analytics (VA) is a new field that focuses on taking large data sets in a form that is opaque to humans, and interactively visualizing them  to reveal the information contained within to a human analyst.

This multidisciplinary field intended to help people understand how to synthesize information in order to derive insights from massive, dynamic, ambiguous, and often conflicting data. Skilled analysts rapidly explore large, complex data sets using interactive visualizations. This draws upon research in a number of relevant areas, including information visualization, human computer interaction, machine learning, statistics, and cognitive science.

Although visual analytics originally was intended to solve data analysis problems in the security and intelligence domains, the tools and techniques that have been developed in the past 6-8 years are also of great interest to analysts in many other data-rich domains, e.g., aerospace safety, manufacturing and maintenance, transportation, financial risk analysis and fraud detection, business intelligence and process analysis, health care and medical research, and environmental health and safety.
