Data Visualization Webinar Series, Part 1 of 4: The Data Visualization Crash Course

August 26, 2015 @ 1:00 pm - 2:00 pm

Data Analysts for Social Good logo

I’m leading a four-part webinar series this August and September 2015 in partnership with Data Analysts for Social Good. Attend one webinar or all four, it’s up to you.

Data Visualization Webinar Series, Part 1 of 4

Visualizing data through charts, tables, and diagrams helps you deliver bite-sized information that viewers will understand at a glance and retain for the long run. This webinar is truly a crash course in data visualization. You’ll learn data visualization is, how it works, and key players and trends in the field. Then we’ll walk through a step-by-step design process so you can apply the critical thinking skills to your own projects. We’ll discuss how to match your visualization to your viewers’ information needs and interests and which dissemination format is best for your project (reports, handouts, dashboards, GIFs, or animated videos, just to name a few possible communications modes). Then you’ll get an introduction to chart choosing skills, like how to swap out your overused clustered bar charts for slope charts or dot plots. The next step in the design process is selecting the correct tool for the job. We’ll talk about the pros and cons of Excel, Tableau, and R for data visualization. Finally, we’ll conclude with best practices for formatting your charts, like increasing your chart’s data:ink ration and ensuring that your color scheme is legible for people with colorblindness.

Date and Time

The webinar will be held Wednesday, August 26, 2015 from 1 – 2 pm Eastern (2 – 3 pm Central).

Kudos for the Data Visualization Crash Course

“Ann did a wonderful job. A great mix of high-level overview and details to keep my interest and provide relevant and useful information.”

“Just wanted to share with you a few sample graphics (not real data) that I developed using some of the principles I learned from you. I have found them so helpful and honestly look at graphs in a completely different way now.”

“Ann, I have to say, I’ve participated in a lot of webinars, and you did yours impeccably well, in terms of how you explained concepts, paced things, and the examples you included. Well done.”

“My new eval specialist here took your AEA webinar. She’s convinced she’s going to drastically improve all my lame charts now.”

“Ann was amazing! This was one of the best webinars I’ve attended.”

“I will never write a proposal even in the same way. Now back to writing my proposal with some visuals!”

“I have to say this was an AMAZING webinar. The webinar gave me tips to implement immediately and inspiration to how to change things over time (especially as I become more proficient in creating new charts).”
