On March 13, 2014, Johanna Morariu, Andrew Means and I are presenting at the Nonprofit Technology Network’s Nonprofit Technology Conference, which will be held in Washington, DC from March 12 through 15, 2014. Our session is titled “DataViz! Tips, Tools, and How-tos for Visualizing Your Data.”
The goal is our session is to give nonprofit leaders the tips and tools they need to apply dataviz principles to their everyday work.
The session will begin by setting the stage: What is dataviz? Why do our brains crave images over text?
Next, we’ll inspire participants by sharing a plethora of awesome dataviz examples. During this rapid-fire presentation, we’ll share 50+ examples of bar charts, line charts, slope graphs, bubble charts, dot plots, histograms, scatterplots, word clouds, mind maps, social network maps, and more. Nonprofits can also use dashboards for easier decision making, data placemats for deeper understanding, and infographics for increased awareness among their supporters. We’ll showcase the best and brightest dataviz leaders by sharing examples from nonprofits and funders throughout the nonprofit community.
We’ll also discuss tips for sharing visuals during staff meetings (with scratch-off graphs) and during Board meetings (through the slow reveal technique). Examples will cover all aspects of nonprofit management: fundraising, social media metrics, evaluation, HR, IT, and more.
Throughout the presentation, we’ll reference dozens of free and nearly-free dataviz tools. Examples of dataviz tools include: amaztype, CartoDB, Color Hex, Color Oracle, Color Palette Generator, Design-Seeds, Excel, Flickr Creative Commons, Gephi, GIMP, Infogram, Instant Eyedropper, ManyEyes, NodeXL, Tableau Public, Tagxedo, visual.ly, and Wordle. We will also reference books, blogs, blog posts, podcasts, and webinar recordings. We’ll share handouts during the session and post resources online.
